It's one of the most popular destinations in Australia’s holiday magnet of Tasmania, and now a highly profitable slice of pristine wilderness has gone on the market.
The freehold and business at Cradle Forest Cottages is for sale for $1,110,000 and can return owner/operators $160,000 a year from the accommodation alone.
“Cradle Mountain ranks at No.2 only behind Port Arthur as Tasmania’s favourite tourist destination,” said John Blacklow from Knight Frank, “and the numbers keep increasing.
“There is a new visitor destination there and the accommodation is at a premium because there is no more commercial land to develop.
“So the Cradle Forest Cottages is a very good property with huge potential.
“It already has an excellent return and you can run it remotely. The current owner lives in Western Australia and organises the cleaners to come in after visitors. All the guests can check in themselves, so you don’t even have to be there to operate the place – although it is a beautiful part of the world to live in.”
The property consists of eight separate accommodation chalets and suites which are located in a secluded forest setting, surrounded by the area’s famous King Billy pines.
The chalets are on one title on 6.249 hectares and are available separately for $750,000.
A front parcel of land fronting the road was formerly occupied by the Moina Tavern which was destroyed by fire in May 2022. It is now a vacant block of land on one title on 1.059 hectares and is available separately for $360,000.
Mr Blacklow said the property contained enough land to increase the number of cottages.
“It is a beautiful part of the world and visitor numbers to Cradle Mountain continue to surge,” he said.
The property is situated on the Cradle Country Trail between Devonport (55 minutes) and Cradle Mountain National Park (20 minutes).
The 1545m Cradle Mountain is Tasmania’s most famous peak and it sets the scene for a range of towering mountain adventures, especially the great walks famous in the area.
The imposing summit stands majestically above Dove Lake, which provides the iconic Cradle Mountain view that adorns tourist brochures around the world.
The ridges and peaks around the lake add stunning angles and vistas to the glorious panorama.
This mighty mountain, which towers over the northern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, is just the starting point to the area’s wilderness experience. Alpine lakes dot the landscape, rainforest meets the riverbanks, and the unique Australian wildlife is everywhere along the trails.
Cradle Mountain is a place for all seasons.
Summers are stunning though sometimes you can even see snow that carpets the region in winter.
In autumn the deciduous trees make wonderful tapestries of colour on the slopes above Dove Lake.
The Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre is 140km west of Launceston, 300km north-west of Hobart, and a million miles from care.
