Brisbane was originally a penal settlement for second offenders from the initital Sydney colony. It was opened as a free settlement in 1842 and adversly affected by the Australian frontier wars between 1843 and 1855.

 

Brisbane was proclaimed as the capital of Queensland in 1859. A popular tourist destination, Brisbane hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1982 and "Expo 88" in 1988 as major events

 

The city of Brisbane is well known for it's unique Queenslander architecture and is one of the key Australian tourist destinations and serves as a key gateway to the popular Gold Coast and beaches of the Sunshine Coast.

 

Major atttractions include South Bank - the cultural epicentre of the city and entertainment hub with restaurants, night clubs and cafe', Lone Pine Koala sanctuary and the Story Bridge climb. On the city's outskirts attractions include The Scenic Rim, Somerset and Lockyer valley.
