The beautifully preserved Victorian town of Beechworth has become one of the State’s most popular tourist destinations, blending colonial heritage and architecture with fabulous food, wine, bushwalks and mountain bike trails.
The historic gold-mining town, about a three-hour drive north-east of Melbourne, is set among majestic elms and oaks, heritage architecture and boutique shopping, and close to the Victorian snow country.
Museums and historic buildings abound.
The bushranger Ned Kelly spent time in the Beechworth prison and famously won a bareknuckle boxing bout behind a pub in the town against another tearaway named “Wild” Wright.
Irishman Robert O'Hara Burke, who led the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition, was stationed in Beechworth as Senior Inspector of Police, as was John Sadleir, one of the policemen who hunted down the Kelly Gang.
Europeans first settled Beechworth in numbers after the discovery of gold in 1852 and a local politician, Daniel Cameron, rode a horse shod with gold horseshoes. A golden horseshoe remains the town’s logo.
The gold rush petered out after a few years, but Ricky Symes, from Tower Real Estate, says Beechworth has another golden opportunity today with the sale of the Beechworth Holiday Park.
“This wonderfully presented freehold going concern is located in the heart of the north-east Victorian goldfields,” he said.
“Beechworth is fast becoming one of regional Victoria's most sought after tourist areas, and the Beechworth Holiday Park is well positioned to continue to reap the benefits of this popularity.
“The Park sits on the tranquil Spring Creek and has a great mix of tourist sites, annual site holders, a variety of cabins and park pods.”
The park has direct access to the Indigo Epic Trail, a 56km mountain bike trail connecting Beechworth and Yackandandah.
Park amenities include a solar heated inground pool, Wi-Fi, playground and camp kitchen.
The park also includes a renovated four-bedroom residence, with a second three-bedroom residence that is currently being used for short-term rentals.
Mr Symes said there was scope to change the park dynamic that could potentially increase income significantly.
The park is priced at $3,750,000 and Mr Symes described it as an “amazing opportunity to buy in a thriving Victorian tourism hot spot”.
He said the holiday park had undergone many improvements and inclusions.
There was a mix of tourist sites, annual site holders, and various accommodation options to suit every budget, including villas, cabins, studios, glamping and camping pods, plus powered and unpowered van and tent sites.
Beechworth is one of regional Victoria's most picturesque and popular tourist areas.
As well as its association with the gold rushes and the Kelly Gang, the town of 4000 has a great cultural heritage as evidenced by the array of grand colonial buildings.
Isaac Isaacs, who grew up in the town, was this country’s first Australian-born Governor-General, appointed in 1931.
Beechworth’s major attractions include Ned Kelly-themed displays at the old court house which commemorates the outlaw’s committal hearing there in 1880.
Beechworth is also home to the Golden Horseshoes Festival Easter Parade through the centre of town, the Burke Museum, and the renowned Beechworth Bakery.
The town is also an end point of the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail.
