New Zealand's spectacular Lake Taupo was formed by what scientists say was the Earth’s greatest volcanic eruption of the last 70,000 years.
Molten debris was shot 50 kilometres into the sky and hundreds of square kilometres of land collapsed and then filled with water, creating New Zealand’s inland sea and one of its most majestic attractions.
Volcanic activity has occurred repeatedly since then but these days most of the activity around Lake Taupo comes from one of New Zealand’s favourite holiday experiences in one of the North Island’s favourite thermal locations.
The vast body of water is a magnet for fishing, hiking, and nature encounters.
Baycrest Thermal Lodge, with its 16 units and beautiful views, is perfectly positioned for guests to enjoy the splendour of Lake Taupo.
The property is a proven performer with strong, increasing revenue and it offers luxury accommodation with many units having private thermal tubs in their own courtyards.
The current owners say it is time to retire after undertaking a full refurbishment of the property in readiness for the post-COVID travel boom.
Marketing agent Brent Hannah from Bayleys said a 30-year lease with a 20-year right of renewal was available for the stunning property.
“That’s 50 years in control and it’s a very attractive offer,” Mr Hannah said, “it’s a great deal.
“The Baycrest Thermal Lodge is in a wonderful location with geo-thermal heating which is a real plus, and there are panoramic lake and mountain views from its elevated position.
“This is a one-off opportunity to secure one of Taupo's best motels.”
The property’s units are only a 150m walk to thermal bathing at the lake’s edge.
The property is also close to local restaurants, bars and the central business district in a city of 26,000 people.
The Baycrest is constructed in a timeless design based on the style of the Millbrook Resort at Arrowtown on the South Island, and the suites are configured to suit all guest demographics.
The property has a new geothermal bore, underfloor heating, a beautifully landscaped inground pool and private thermal tubs in its outdoor garden courtyards for all of the ground floor units.
The manager’s home adjoining reception is a large well-appointed residence with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
While Lake Taupo’s reputation rests on its vast natural beauty, the Baycrest offers guests all of the modern conveniences including free onsite electric vehicle charging, unlimited free WiFi, and Smart Televisions in every suite.
There are natural thermal tubs in the garden courtyards of all the ground floor suites.
As well as the panoramic views from first floor suites, there are spa baths and private sheltered balconies.
Lake Taupo, 270km south of Auckland and 370km north of the Kiwi capital of Wellington, is a huge, shining expanse of water with an average depth of 100m that constantly changes colour from aquamarine blue to jade green.
The water is crystal-clear to a depth of 13 metres and is home to one of the best wild trout fisheries in the world, more than 30 species of water bird, several types of native fish and native crayfish.
