Made up of 22 local government areas, Tropical North Queensland makes up 20 percent of the state, and is ranked in the top five Australian destinations for international travellers, and one of the top 20 destinations for domestic visitors.

Tropical weather conditions and warm winters make Tropical Northern Queensland a popular option throughout the year, with domestic visitors from cooler states travelling to the area for a mid-year getaway. Peak periods generally align with various public state school holidays.
While many travel for leisure, business tourism is also prevalent in the region throughout the year, with more than 900 business events drawing over 70,000 delegates. In total the region welcomes over 40,000 combined domestic and international visitors each year.
Both domestic and international travellers can access Tropical North Queensland via Cairns Airport, with several shuttle buses offering services to popular local accommodation options and coastal areas such as Palm Cove and Port Douglas. The high-speed Sunlander train also offers transport from Brisbane to Cairns.
The region offers a broad range of accommodation options to suit various demographics, with luxury hotels and resorts available, as well as budget accommodation, camping and holiday parks. It has a total of more than 220 hotels, motels and serviced apartments (HMSA), amounting to over 352,550 beds. With many family friendly activities to be found in the area, accommodation caters to everyone from the solo traveller, couples looking for a romantic getaway, or families requiring multiple beds.
