Albury

Located on the southern border of New South Wales and separated from its twin city Wodonga by the Murray River, Albury is an inland town that not only offers visitors a convenient stopping point on the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne, but also a myriad of great outdoor activities.

 

Albury is home to many picturesque parks and gardens along the Murray River and Lake Hume, providing the perfect backdrop for a walk or picnic. Some visitors choose to take a scenic walking track such as The Murray River Trail, Wagirra Trail or Yindayamarra Sculpture Walk, while others hire a kayak or canoe to explore the river.

 

Nearby historic townships provide plenty of opportunities for day trips, with Albury being central to a number of esteemed wineries in local townships such as Rutherglen.

 

While Albury experiences warm to hot spring and summer months, it can experience cold winters, with average temperatures falling as low as three degrees Celsius. While the cooler weather may drive away tourists in other parts of Australia, Albury’s convenient location on the Hume Highway makes it a popular place to stop and visit throughout the year.

 

While it’s common for domestic visitors to drive to the twin city, some choose to catch a domestic flight into Albury Airport which is a short drive from Albury’s city centre. Shuttle services operate to select local hotels, and visitors can also jump in a taxi or hire a rental car from one of the many rental companies based at the airport.

 

Albury has a huge offering of accommodation, ranging from budget options to luxury stays. Visitors can choose to stay in a motel, hostel or holiday park, or make a booking at one of the city’s 204 hotels, serviced apartments or local dining options. The accommodation and food services sector employs 7.4 percent of Albury’s 51,000 residents, and caters to the 1,335,000 visitor nights that are recorded each year with neighbouring city Wodonga.

 

Tourism to the area culminates an average daily expenditure of $124 per guest, with 42 cents of each tourist dollar spent going to the accommodation and food services sector.
