Wily Irish Mammy’s dusting hacks for the craic

Mammy’s favourite saying is: “A little soap and water never killed anybody!”

It doesn’t take much effort, time, or expense to make huge improvements to your cleaning routine; not that your guests need to know that! So here are five cleaning hacks that are easy as pie but will have your visitors eating from the palm of your hand:

  1.
  2. Easy-clean ceiling fans

Mammy hates to see dust bunnies flying through the air when a ceiling fan is turned on – oh that’s some shenanigans! So, she grabs an old pillowcase and sprays glass cleaner or a mixture of half vinegar and half water inside and slides the pillowcase over blade of the fan, then slowly pulls it off while applying gentle pressure to wipe the top of the blade clean. The blade is dusted while the dust falls into the pillowcase, instead of hitting the clean floor!

  1.
  2. Tea leaves to clean a dusty floor

Oh, Mammy loves her tea! She drinks a dozen cups a day and is very suspicious of non-tea drinkers but she also thinks it’s rude to say yes to tea, even if you want one. So, say no - at least once before you give in! Her top tea cleaning tip is: sprinkle cheap dried tea leaves on dusty hard floors and the leaves grab the dust making it easier to sweep.

  1.
  2. A soft paintbrush to dust

Mammy uses a paintbrush to reach all those awkward dust traps, it is especially effective for gently dusting bookshelves, picture frames and ornaments.

  1.
  2. Use old stockings

Mammy has some inspired uses for her old underwear. She wraps a stocking around the head of her broom to attract dust, adding some free anti-static cloth action to her routine!

  1.
  2. Socks for window blinds

Mammy puts old bed socks sprayed with vinegar and water on her hands to clean her blinds. Using them like gloves she runs her sock covered fingers and thumb across both sides of the slat makes a quick and easy job of it.
